Whose Fault is it?
A few days ago, a mother was raped. The story goes like this: She was walking the street of Manila and planning to get a massage. A man told her, he can give her one but, he can’t do it on the sidewalk. She let the stranger take her to a cheap motel and was raped.
The other day, someone I know, fell prey to a scam employment agency. He only decided to check on the agency days after he had paid the amount that the agency was asking for.
My heart goes to the unknowing victims of these ruthless opportunists, but mulling over the 2 stories, I can’t help but wonder if there really is such a need for sympathy. I can only shake my head and sigh.
Ignorance doesn’t choose its victims. Being gullible is not a reasonable excuse. To be vulnerable is to be weak. Both stories show how most of us can be gullible and ignorant of things that we shouldn’t be ignorant about. We’ve all been warned not to talk to strangers when we were younger, but I guess because of people’s natural tendency to trust other people, we always end up trusting even those we shouldn’t trust.
Who’s at fault in stories like these? Is it the victim, for being so trusting or the criminal for taking advantage of the victim’s vulnerability?
The society is full of dark streets and alleys. If we’re not careful enough, creepy dark crawlers will eat us alive. These creatures live on people’s vulnerability and thrive on people’s gullibility. It’s sad that we have them as members of our society. They’re like cockroaches. No matter how much you try to get rid of them, they always find their way to your house.
I don’t know how to feel (or if I should even feel anything) for things like these but the thought has bugged me for 2 days already that I needed to let it out. Now, I can finally put it to rest.

It’s hard to judge who’s at fault but I tend to blame too much disgusting stupidity which perpetuates crimes.

Yah. Sad isn’t it? that people often become victims because of their stupidity.
