Escudero Walks
After a long wait on Escudero’s declaration, his announcement surprised everyone yesterday . He’s leaving NPC, the party he’s been with since the start of his political career.
Chiz gave 3 reasons for leaving his party, all of which focused on his desire to be able to decide and act on his own. He still left us hanging though, about his decision on the May 2010 elections. Again, he asked his supporters to give him time to think things through.
His 3 reasons for Leaving his Party:
- He believes that whoever wants to run for president should take the Country as his party and all Filipinos as members of his party.
- A leader shouldn’t be controlled by his party. He should be able to promulgate laws without worrying about how his actions will affect the members of his party.
- He said he’d be able to think and decide better if he’s not a member of any party.
What Happens Now?
Most political analysts said Escudero’s decision would hurt his chances on winning the presidential race. They say, no one, in the history of Philippine politics, has won the presidential elections without a party. Sounds like a challenge to me. Will Escudero take the risk?
An Admirable Move
After Escudero’s announcement yesterday, there have been speculations that other members of the party might also follow his move. NPC is in a great mess. Whatever internal problems they have, they better do something about it fast or risk losing most of their members.
On a previous post, I mentioned about Escudero’s bravery to stand up for the things he believes in. He showed the same courage yesterday. For him to decide to leave the party who has aided him since the start of his career, means something more. Chiz has always been a man of honor. I don’t think someone would make a decision like he did without much contemplation.
Escudero’s move may have hurt his bid for the presidential seat, but it doesn’t mean the end for him. Great leaders are those who know how to take great risks. Acquiring the highest government position is not the greatest proof of leadership, but the ultimate test. This is what Chiz tried to convey yesterday. A leader shouldn’t be manipulated or tied down by any party’s goals. A leader must be free to decide and act for the greater good, not only for the benefit of his party.
Yesterday, Escudero walked out of NPC’s walls.
Today, He walks a free man. A person who will continue to follow the path to righteousness without the glitz and glamour of being in a political party.
